Samuel De Champlain

_____He looks like the squirrel, because many beard on his face and a cast of features also like the squirrel. I think his clothes looks very smart. His long hair make him more yonger and great-hearted. He was trading fur with the native people.

_____Samuel de Champlain was born in Brouage, France in 1567?. His family may have been lower nobility. He was a French explorer, navigator and cartographer. He is known by some as "Father of New France." He mapped much of Northeastern North America. He discovered a lake located between New York and Vermont, which would be later named for him in 1609.
In 1603, he decided to look for a Northwest passage and settle Gaspe Penninsula.
In 1604, he returned to Canada and charted most of the coast of Nova Scotia and down the coast to Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard.
In 1608, he and thirty-two settlers started a colony in Quebec for set up fur trade.
In 1609, Champlain and his men established relations with the Huron Indians and helped them fight the Iroquois Indians.
He led Quebec until the English attacked the city and put up a fort in July of 1629.
Champlain would later die of a stroke in 1635.

2. What is his relationship with Canada? Why is he important to Canada?
_____During the summer of 1609, he first established relations with some native groups and helped them in their war against the Iroquois.After he killed two of the Iroquois' chiefs, the relationship between the French and the Indian were developed, but the relationship between the French and the Iroquois became more and more dangerous. Because Samuel de Champlain was Quebec City's and New France's Governor. He is the founder of Quebec City on July 3, 1608, of which he was the administrator for the rest of his life. He let many European countries know the Canada and he had formed the settlement in Canada.made a very accurate map of Canada from Hudson Bay in the north down to the Great Lakes, and he founded a settlement and trading post along the St. Lawrence River that eventually became the city of Quebec.

3. When did he explore? What was happening during history at this time?
_____He explored in 1603-1616. There he wrote an account of his life from 1604 to 1612 and his journey up the Ottawa river, his Voyages and published another map of New France. He returned to New France in the spring of 1615 with four Recollects for further religious life in the new colony. Champlain continued to work to improve relations with the natives promising to help them in their struggles against the Iroquois. With his native guides he explored further up the Ottawa River and reached Lake Nipissing. He then followed the French River until he reached the fresh-water sea he called Lac Attigouautau (now Lake Huron).In 1615, Champlain was escorted through the Peterborough area by a group of Hurons. He used the ancient portage between Chemong Lake and Little Lake (now Chemong Road); stayed for a short period of time in Bridgenorth area.

In the summer of 1609, Champlain and a group of Native Americans set off to find the lake. In July they arrived upon its shore. Traveling south along the lake, they encountered a large group of Iroquois warriors near Ticonderoga. Fighting ensued and Champlain used his firearms to defeat and drive off the Iroquois. This brutal skirmish led to years of hostility between the French and Iroquois.

5. Why did he explore? What were his reasons for exploration?
____Beacuse he wanted to find the new world for France. He had many reasons for exploration. His king let him to find the new world. He found the Quebec of Canada. His king let him to find the road to Quebec and make a map for Canada. When he find the new world, he need help his king to develop the new world and had some benfit by himself.

6. How did he explore? What transportation methods did he use?
____He explored by ship with many teammates and weapons, because he explored between Canada and Europe. Only have sea between Canada and France. He went to explore with a lot of crew and weapon was because at that time, most of people were rude and lag, they would solve problem by fighting and protect themself.
